New Retina MacBook Pro Freezing Up on Users

The new MacBook Pro has only been on the shelf a short while, but already there are already over 19 pages on the Apple Forum regarding them. It seems that both the 13-inch and 15-inch Macbook Pro Retina Haswell models have freezing issues.

Owners are complaining about trackpad and keyboard freeze-ups that can they claim only be resolved with a hard reset. The freezing issues seems to apply to all variations. The machines themselves seem to be running during the error as programs, videos and sleep mode are active. The problem is that the keyboard and trackpad are non-responsive.

Apples Suggestion

The initial solution offered to one MacBook user was;

  1. Reset SMC hardware test
  2. Run Apple hardware test
  3. Use the disk utility to verify/repair disk
  4. Reinstall clean OSX

Besides the fact that is not something that one wants to do on a new computer, it also does not seem to work. This is just a generic solution offered by Apple to appease a user.

A Temporary Fix

Apple has not offered up a solution yet, but many are finding a temporary fix that will allow them to continue using their computers, or at least least save their work. Users are putting their computers to sleep for 5 to 15 minutes and that seems to temporarily resolve the issue. Their is no discernible rhyme or reason to the timing of the sleep mode at this point.

This does not solve the issue, it only solves that particular freeze incident. If sleep does not work then the user will have to force a hard shut down on their system.


If you are one of the victims of this glitch, please report it to Apple. The more reports they get, the quicker they will be able to find a solution.

In the meantime users seem to be split between returning their new MacBooks and holding out for a solution. If Apple doesn’t offer a solution soon, I have a feeling they will be inundated with returned computers.
