iPad Rumors Update, Cheaper iPad is on its Way?
The iPad rumors have started rolling in again. KGI Securities claims that the new iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 will be released in Q4 2013. More specifically, this company claims the new iPads will be released Friday, November 1, 2013. That is pretty specific, so it’s tough to believe the accuracy of that prediction so far in advance. We do believe that a Q4 release will happen though.
These pictures are what we think the next iPads will look like. As you can see, the larger, iPad 5 will have the same, thinner bezel as the iPad Mini. This thinner bezel will allow the overall footprint of the larger 9.7″ iPad to be smaller and lighter. Along with this rumor, it is now strongly believed that the next iPad Mini will have a Retina Display, meaning that this iPad will not be a ‘cheaper’ iPad, but just a smaller iPad with the same functionality and quality as the larger iPad 5.
The last rumor that has come up in recent days is that a newer, cheaper iPad will be released in 2014. Similar to the iPhone rumors, releasing a cheaper iPad mini in 2014 will allow Apple to have a large range of prices for its iPads. One might see an iPad Mini 2C, which we believe would be an appropriate name given the iPhone 5C rumors, at a Kindle-like $199 baseline price point with a plastic casing in a variety of colors. This would put the iPads from $199 for a plastic 7.9″ design at 16GB up to $929 for the 128GB iPad 5 with 4G LTE cellular. Apple would have a really strong foothold in the tablet market, from the bottom to the top, if it released an iPad Mini 2 with Retina Display and later an iPad Mini 2C with a plastic casing. See the table below for comparisons.
