Apple has released iOS 5.0.1 to the public, the update adds multitasking gestures to the original iPad. The release also includes some bug fixes affecting battery life and documents in the cloud. This is the first update that can be installed Over The Air (OTA).

To install the update wirelessly, go to Settings-> General-> Software Update-> Download and Install.

You also have the option of installing the update by plugging your iOS device into your computer and using iTunes.

iOS 5.0.1 is available for iPad (1 and 2), iPhone (4S, 4, and 3GS), and iPod touch (third- and fourth-generation).

This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including:

  • Fixes bugs affecting battery life
  • Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
  • Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
  • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation

Warning
If you are planning on jailbreaking your device, you shouldn’t update to iOS 5.0.1.

Earlier this week pod2g reported that a code signing bug found in iOS 5.0 will make it easier for hackers to develop an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. That bug has likely been closed in iOS 5.0.1.
