Siri – The best new feature on the iPhone 4S

// October 5, 2011

Apple announced the new iPhone 4S today and it’s most impressive new feature is Siri. The cofounder of Siri, Norman Winarsky recently said that the Siri-powered virtual personal assistant won’t just be a big deal, it will be a “world changing event.” If Siri works actually works as good in real life as in the demonstrations, he just might be right. The voice-recongnition technology in Siri is probably a couple of years ahead of any other artificial intelligence that I have seen.

The company’s new Siri “intelligent assistant” seems to understand english in the way a person would. It doesn’t only understands what you say, it’s smart enough to know what you mean. So when you ask “Any good burger joints around here?” Siri will reply “I found a number of burger restaurants near you.” Then you can say “What about tacos?” Siri remembers that you just asked about restaurants, so it will look for Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood.

Things that Siri can assist you with;
  • Ask for a reminder
  • Ask to send a text
  • Ask about the weather
  • Ask for information (“Where’s the best pizza place?” or “Where’s an ATM?”)
  • Ask to set a meeting
  • Ask to send an email
  • Ask for a number in your contact
  • Ask to set an alarm
  • Ask for directions
  • Ask about stocks
  • Ask to set a timer
  • Ask about Siri
  • Take dictation (Write messages, notes, email, etc.)

Siri will work in English, French and German initially. It will only work on the iPhone 4S and you will need a data connection (3G or WiFi). For now Siri will be in beta and Apple promises to add more languages in the future.

Siri is also suppose to “get better” as it learns from you and your voice.
