No Sound on iPad & iPhone Games & Apps: How to fix the problem

Many people have complained about having no sound on iPad air/iPhone 6 issue, and this can have a very detrimental impact on the enjoyment level of utilizing games and apps. Fortunately, there are multiple different techniques that can be used to fix no sound on iPhone 7 plus/idevices. Sometimes the sound fix can be very simple or more complicated one that would need to reset your iPhone 6/iPhone 7 Plus. Sometimes by just updating to the newest iOS 9.0 or iOS 10.3.1 can cause it to have no sound. This can be fix by just restarting the iPad.
Tips for Fixing the Issue of No Sound on iPad
1. Make Sure the iPad/iPhone Sound is Not Muted
Check the small side switch. If there is a reddish-orange mark visible, the iPad is muted. Please note that the sides switch can be use either for muting the iPad, or locking rotation.
To fix this issue, simply push the switch up into the non-muted position. If the sound is still not working, you can:
– Double tap on the home button to bring up the menu on the bottom of the device.
– Scroll to the right until the iPad’s sound icon appears. If this icon has a hash through it, click on it once to turn the sound back on.
For iOS 7 users, simply swipe up from the middle of bottom of the screen to see the control center. The sound control is on the bottom left corner. See sound control image below:
2. Turn the Sound All the Way Up
– In some cases, turning the sound all the way up will correct this issue because you might have accidentally lower the volume too much to hear any sound from your iPad.
3. Close All Apps and Reboot the iPhone 6 /iPad Air
– Double tap the home button so that you can access each app that is running, and then slide each of them up to close them.
– Once this has been completed, press the power and home button down at the same time and hold them until after the iPod screen has gone black. This process will be finished as soon as the Apple logo appears, and that is when it is time to stop pressing the buttons.
For some iOS 10.3.1 users to fix the Sound, Go to the ‘General Setting’ ‘Use the side switch to:’ and change setting from ‘Mute’ to ‘Lock Rotation’. This seem to fix the sound problem for most users that had updated to iOS 10.3.1.
Checkout this Video if you still can’t get sound to work on the iPad:
4. Restore the iPad to Factory Settings
Doing this will delete all of the data from the iPad, so it is important to back everything up to iTunes via a computer first. To complete the reset process, perform these steps:
– Click on Settings and then General.
– Then click on General
– Scroll down the page to the reset option.
– Click on Reset and then select Erase All Content and Settings.
This will generate two pop-up warnings, and it is necessary to press Erase on both of them. It is important to note that restoring the factory settings can take an extended period of time, so the battery should be fully charged before starting this process.
5. Changing the language on iPad Air or iPhone 7 to another “language” and back to English(US,UK) again
If all of the solution above doesn’t solve your sound problem, you can try changing the language setting on the iPad. Pro tip, try to avoid language such as Japanese and Chinese as it would be hard to navigate back.
6. Sound Option is missing in taskbar on iPad/iPhone 7 – Stuck in Headphone Mode
Plugging in a pair of headphone and the sound would work. As dirt and other particle build up in the charging connector, the sound would stop working. To clean the iPad, you can blow air into the the charging and headphone jack for few minutes to fix the sound problem. Use a hair dryer if you don’t want to blow on the charging and headphone jack.
7. Dry toothbrush to brush the dust out of dock connector
Using a dry toothbrush to brush debris/dust off the iPhone 7 dock connector. You can add rubbing alcohol to get the extra hard dust and debris out of the iPhone 7 plus or iPad.
8. The iPad Volume Bar is missing. No sound in apps.
To fix the disappeared volume bar, first you need to check does your sound still work. To check this problem, plug in a set of speaker on to the iPad. If you hear sound coming out of the speaker, you can move onto the next phase in fixing missing sound bar. Cleaning up the dock connector on iPad will usually fix the sound bar. Make sure you turn off the iPad and then brush the dock connector with a dry toothbrush. If brushing doesn’t fix the sound, you can try using a credit credit and zigzag it to the charging dock.
9. The Home Button Method – In Fixing No iPhone sound
Try this method by pressing down the area near the Home Button. The reason why this method will sometime works is that the hardware that is connecting the speaker of the phone is located near this area. Therefore by just constantly pressing that area you can sometime restore the loose sound connection.
9. Turning off the Bluetooth Features/Airplane Mode
Some people have success in getting back sound on iPad, when they disable the Bluetooth. To Disable Bluetooth, Goto Setting and look for Bluetooth and turn it off. Also turning off Airplane mode too as this will sometimes disable the sound. The purpose of Bluetooth is for connecting a external keyboard or another audio devices. So disabling Bluetooth won’t be effecting your user experience as much.
10. Are you on the latest iOS update for your iPhone 7/iPad Air?
If you’re on an older iOS version, try updating to the latest iOS 10.2.1. New iOS update will fixes software & glitches related problem on the iPhone/iPad. You can also check is your App updated to the newest version by tapping on the app in Setting.
11. Backup your Device and Restore As New
Simply by backing up your device and restoring as new will fix all of the setting error. This will change back all the setting to default. So, if you restore as new and the iPad sound is still not working. It should be time to goto an Apple store and see what they suggest.
12. Still having problems? – Checkout iPad Air App Sound Problem
If the above solutions didn’t work, there are other potential causes for no sound on iPad. Have you checked the headphone jack? If there is something stuck in there, the iPad might think headphones are plugged in and thus there would be no sound.
If there is no sound in a specific app or a game, you can try updating or reinstalling the app.
Please help as there is no sound coming on my iPad 3 apps as I am teaching her vowels phonics but anyhow no sound is coming.sound is fully on but still no sound coming from iPad3.i facing this problem from last six months.please help.Thank you.
Thanks Very Much!!.. Was having trouble with my sound and this fixed it.
Here’s an odd one. I have two apps for learning German. After installing the latest OS I lost sound on both of them, though sound on other apps was fine. I switched Use side switch from Mute to Lock Rotation, as advised. Result: One of the apps has full sound restored, the other has audible sound effects, but no voices! Figure that one out.
Latest OS update has made my home button glitchy. Not fully responsive anymore on both my ipad and my iphone. Very strange that audio restored on only one of your apps. Sorry. No idea how to fix that one.
Thanks!
This worked for me.
Go to ‘General’ ‘Use side switch to:’ and change setting from ‘Mute’ to ‘Lock Rotation’. Try this first!!!! I tried all above and none worked. This fixed it.
Thank you this fixed mine too!
None of the above worked. Figured out that if i went to: General, Use side switch to: and then changed the setting from ‘Mute’ to ‘Lock Rotation’, my sound was back. Problem started when I pressed hard on the side button to quickly mute a loud ad that popped up between turns in Word. TRY THIS FIRST!!!
Why did my iPad have no sound coming out? I just updated to iOS 10.2.1 and all the app stop playing sound.
My iPhone 7 Plus wasn’t having any sound. The left speaker wasnt having any sound.. I think my iPhone 7 had some dirt or dust messing it up.
I tried all the steps listed in my ipad2. Nothing is working. I took it to the service center. They are telling me to exchange to another ipad2 for 20K. Very unfair. After the software update it is not working. I thought it is not working after i changed to child proof cover.
Help, I’ve tried everything suggested, language switch, shutting off, bluetooth off, everything through control panel and settings. Went down to plug my ipad into computer to try the reset and erase all settings and when it came to asking for my password and stating all memory would be erased, (I know, the warning box) I didn’t know for sure if everything I had would be backed up and saved so I panicked and didn’t go through with this. Still don’t have sound on my IPad 2 for 3 days now and I have the IOS 10.
Okay, I did everything. I reset and deleted everything. Backed up memory reset. Volume still doesn’t work, I guess its off to the Apple store.
NO WAY IT ACTUALLY WORKED FOR MY IPAD Air 2 I did the blocking method and where you press down near the home button
so dumb of me, my iPhone 7 was muted
I just had this problem. Tried all of the above with no fix. I opened the iTunes app to see if I could hear music. I noticed the volume was down. Turned it up the whole way, and now the apps have sound. Weird but it worked.
It’s not so easy, however it’s also simple enough to fix this problem. Deleting the download apps at start in iTunes then try redownloading apps again and it work perfectly.
I’ve almost tried everything from cleaning the headphone, reseting the iPhone. The last time my sound was working was when I was listening to music on YouTube connecting it to a loudspeakers. Now the sound is muted and I am sad.
I notice that turning off the Bluetooth features on the iPhone and my sound is back on. My question is, why my sound keep going off when Bluetooth is enable. The volume work fine till if I have my Bluetooth on, without it the sound is disable.. I turn on my Bluetooth in my car for music and other features.
Thank you!! I had known about fixing the sound issue on my iPad3 by rebooting it, but that wasn’t always convenient as sometimes I’d have a lot of browser tabs open that I didn’t want to loose.. Resetting the sound levels by changing the language back and forth (and not having to reboot fully) worked for me!
The sound is not coming from apple i pad 32GB ,model :A1430 after resetting the you tube video instruction.please help me.
My sound only works sometimes on safari videos but will only work sometimes in game, sometimes I can’t even play a video on my iPad….grrrr?????
I fix my problem in the control center, turn off access within Apps.???
Thank you!! After a few weeks of no sound on my games I found your help page and fixed it in 30 seconds – I didn’t realize it was muted on my home page on my iPad Air. Thanks again!!!
After having no luck with other suggestions I tried changing to another language and it worked! Thank you.
To show the mute button on the bottom toolbar (the one you swipe up from the bottom to see) you need to go into settings/general and change the option “use side switch to” Lock Rotation instead of mute.
Then when you swipe up to reveal the toolbar you will see the mute button (bell symbol) instead of the orientation lock symbol.
Toggling the mute button on and off fixed my problem when nothing else did!
My I pod won’t get sound even I adjust the volume bar.when I adjust volume bar it sounds very low for few seconds with grrr.pl help me to get good volume
I spiked some juice on my iPad some time ago and now I can’t get any sound everything else works can you help me.
My iPod plays sound for YouTube, vine. And sometimes music. But everything else does not play sound. If I go to settings and adjust the volume it works for the preview. But not for the tones. HALLLP
I had locked the ringer on my iPad instead of locking the rotation orientation which muted some of the applications but not the others. This was fixed by unlocking the rotation button.
I just turned off and restarted my IPad and my sound came back on.
My iPad 2 sound stopped working on everything but Pandora Radio. I have checked the lock/mute and it is not on mute. I have checked the voumn level in the control panel…it is up. I cleaned the headphone jack. I did not change the language or do the factory reset. Is this a common problem? What do you suggest?
I was watching movie and the volume just stop I still have ring tone I have tried everything but reset will that make me lose everything if I have to reset it
I have an old iPad 2 that I deleted and reset to give to my mom. I downloaded some apps, but noticed some games didn’t have sound, but my music and audiobooks did.. None of the things above work, or sometimes the buttons didn’t apply cuz this is an older iPad…BUT, I figured it out .. I usually have the switch for rotation lock (next to volume switch) set to lock cuz I don’t like the screen moving.. I stumbled upon a setting in settings under general then side switch. that said I could choose this button to be for rotation lock, or mute, and somehow it was set to mute… I switched it back to rotation lock and it fixed it!!!
Thank you so much. Number one worked for me… I double tapped on the screen at the bottom of the page and clicked the bell with the line through it and the sound returned……. thank you again
My mute button in the control centre was on! I had no idea as some apps were working! Thanks guys.
Getting the debris/dust off of my iPhone 6 seems to fix my sound problem. Before I couldn’t hear any sound on my iPhone 6 when I have apps like clash of Clan on. Watching videos from youtube videos was very unpleasant without sound. Thx for helping me fix the sound.
I found the sound icon at the bottom left of the menu screen. It was muted and i just switched back on.Very helpful thank you.
Volume sound bar in control center snaps back to muted setting every time I try to raise it, “mute” sign remains on screen.
Thank you. very helpful.
Hi
No audio alerts for texts, emails, news etc. Tried changing sounds – no effect. Shut down and restart – no effect. Other sounds on games and music seem to be working fine. Volume responds normally. Any suggestion?
Still nothing, no sound on games, YouTube or notifications!
Audio works perfectly fine on everything on my iPad 2, *except* a couple ‘musical instrument’ apps (Kamigata Shamisen and Bass Guitar). The audio does work on Autoharp and Hammered Dulcimer though. I’ve re-installed the affected apps and tried the switch and changing between rotate lock and mute settings, but still nothing. The ‘swipe up’ menu shows sound full-on with nothing muted and no external deviced paired. Any solutions to update the drivers for multi-touch ‘fret-and-strum’ apps?
I have tried all the options provided… Reset language to English, checked mute switch, rebooted the iPad 4, nothing is working. The volume control on the side is not reflecting any volume changes. Also, if I activate the control panel from the bottom of my screen ( swoosh ) there are not volume levels shown. Can anyone help me?
Thank you! I stopped at the first tip. When the ringer’s muted, the game sounds are muted also.
I figured it out!!!!
If you have tried every thing but failed like me try this-
TURN YOUR BLUETOOTH OFF!!
After closing, refreshing, deleting, updating, cleaning, changing languages nothing worked. I finally figured out the ipad was pairing to some random Ihome speaker we don’t use anymore. Turned off the Bluetooth for this device and BAM!!
Damn it feels good to be a gangster..
Check if you accidentally have the “do not disturb” set to “on”
Thank you!!!!! This totally fixed my problem. I had the sound off in my airdrop section!
thankyou for the help. I had pushed a bell in the airdrop section. I have sound now??
Restoring as a new iPad rather than restore from my backup was the fix for me.
This has all the symptoms of a SW bug. Please could Apple investigate and fix it.
My sound only reinstates after a reboot does this suggest a sound card issue
I do have sound, but it’s so faint that I cannot hear it. When I go to settings, I see that the sound is turned up all the way. When I move the bar down and then up, the sound is normal, but then it reverts to almost inaudible. Thank you for your help! Ruta

I’ve checked the mute, turned the sound all the way up, shut down all apps, rebooted, updated, and still I get sound on YouTube but no sound on games. Do I really have to restore to factory settings if the iOS 8 update is still going to mute sound in apps? What else can I do that is faster?
No sound on iPad 2. Tried every suggestion I can find. Still no sound, except through headphones.. IPad not under warranty.
I have lost all sound on my iPad. No keyboard sound, no sound in apps and games.
FaceTime works so the speakers are not faulty.
I have checked all info in settings and also done a reset but I still have no sound. Is there anything else I can try.

I have tried all of these. TV apps, YouTube, Pandora are all working. Most of my educational apps and games are not – no sound. I have tried everything including factory reboot. Ugh!
Thank you so much!
Hi, there is no sound nor indicator when I adjust the volume. There is no slide bar at the bottom left in the control panel. The sound works when I plug in a jack to play through an amp. Ipad2 I have factory reset, soft reset, checked mute button. Heeeelp pleeeeeease!
