Siri: HAL 9000 with a Sense of Humor

We all remember the iconic scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey where HAL 9000, the evil computer on the spacecraft, is asked to let one of the ships occupants back onboard and responds coldly with “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.” Well, my fandom of that movie came to mind the first time, 5 years ago, I encountered the iPhone’s digital assistant, Siri. I thought I was pretty clever when I asked her to “open the pod bay doors.”

Apparently I was not the first person to think of that. She had a programmed response: “Will we Artificial Intelligence’s ever live that one down?”

Pretty funny, Apple, pretty funny.

In all seriousness, this fact really drives home how much attention to detail Apple puts into their products. From the iPad, to the iPhone, to the Macbook, all their products have a level of craftsmanship and thoughtfulness put into their design that few companies rival.

Siri is no exception to this rule. She (It?) is full of funny little easter eggs like that, which makes messing around with this digital assistant so much fun. Check some funny ones out in this video:
