Dating sites are nothing new. They’ve been around since the 90’s and their popularity only continues to grow. But since the emergence of the latest smartphones and tablets that are practically mini-laptops, the game has changed altogether when it comes to the convenience, ease and style of online dating. Enter Tinder into the picture. Tinder was released on September 15, 2012 and over a year later; it’s safe to say that it has completely revolutionized the world of matchmaking and online dating. Did I mention that it’s 100% free?

Available on both Apple and Android operating systems, Tinder has cited that it has over 2 million members accessing the app every day mainly in English speaking countries.I personally find myself logging on to the app several times a day whether I’m bored, not bored, or just looking to have some fun with a friend as we browse through the profiles together.

So how does Tinder work exactly? I feel that so much of the app’s appeal and skyrocketing popularity have so much to do with its sheer simplicity and straightforwardness. All one has to do in sign in via their Facebook account (mandatory), choose one to six photos from your Facebook photos (or not), fill out your profile (or not), tinker with the settings, and you’re good to go!

Now the fun can begin. Tinder makes use of location services and GPS so that it can detect your approximate location and begin searching for people around you who have the app as well. If you somebody who catches your fancy, you either swipe right or hit the heart button (“liked”). On the other hand, rejecting a person is as easy as swiping left or hitting the X button (“nope”). The app is addictive as it’s almost impossible to run out of people to either “like” or “dislike” and nothing beats the feeling of matching with someone. Matching on Tinder only occurs if the person you have “liked” likes you back. In other words, you have 100 percent control of who gets to talk to you. What can I say? Keep calm and Tinder on!
