The NYT reported today that Alphonso Labs, the company that makes the Pulse News App, has raised $800,000 in venture capital funding and they are changing their business model from a paid app to a free app.

The company is attempting to attract more users and eventually more partnerships with publishers and advertisers.

The Pulse News Reader app formats RSS feeds is a graphically pleasing magazine style, similar in concept to Flipboard, that turns links shared on Twitter and Facebook into a magazine format.

The Pulse app has been very popular since its debut in May. The app has been featured in the App Store’s Hall of Fame and Steve Jobs showed it during a keynote back in June of this year.
