Today, Amazon launched a Kindle web app optimized for the iPad. The new web app can be accessed by visiting amazon.com/ipadkindlestore in Safari on your iPad.

Amazon has done such a good job with the web app it feels like a native app from the App Store. It is smooth and supports touch gestures, like swiping left and right to browse the store’s virtual shelves.

Amazon still has a Kindle app in the App Store but they remove purchasing links last summer. Now, purchases can be made in the Kindle web app and the Kindle books can be read in the Safari web app or downloaded to the native iOS app.

The Kindle apps offer an excellent alliterative to iBooks on the iPad but unfortunately there has not been a iPhone version of the Kindle web app store announced yet.
