This is a tutorial for Windows users who want to jailbreak their first generation iPad with iOS 4.3.1 using sn0wbreeze. This jailbreak will not work for iPad 2 users, we will provide a tutorial for the iPad 2 when a compatible jailbreak is released.
Step 1
- Download sn0wbreeze 2.5.1.zip from here.
- Download the 4.3.1 IPSW from here.
In case the above link doesn’t work, please use the mirror link below:
HotFile Mirror: Download sn0wbreeze 2.5.1.zip
Step 2
Extract, then launch the sn0wbreeze application.
When the sn0wbreeze application opens click ok, close the credits and click the next arrow.
Step 3
Locate the IPSW file you saved earlier (use browse or drag and drop), then click next.
Step 4
Sn0wbreeze will identify your IPSW and let you know when it’s complete. Click the next arrow after the IPSW has been verified.
Step 5
Choose either Simple or Expert Mode.
Simple mode is recommended for most users. Expert mode lets users add custom boot logos, root partition size, installer options, etc. Click the next arrow to continue.
Step 6
Snowbreeze will now build your IPSW (you can play PacMan while you wait). When it’s done the new IPSW file will be on your desktop.
Step 7
You will need to make sure your iPad is plugged into the computer and it’s turned off (hold power button a few seconds then slide to power off).

Step 8
Sn0wbreeze will guide you through putting your device in DFU mode. Follow the on screen instructions.
Step 9
Once you have successfully put you device in DFU mode you will get this message.
Step 10
Open iTunes, hold down the SHIFT Key and click Restore.
Now, locate the sn0wbreeze IPSW on your desktop and click open.

Step 11
After the restore process is complete your iPad will be jailbroken. The Cydia icon should be on the iPad when it’s turned on.
Thanks to i0n1c (Stefan Esser) for the jailbreak and iH8sn0w for the jailbreak tool sn0wbreeze.

I have 1st generation Ipad. I really want to jailbreak it but have been sufficiently frightened by Apple techies that say it will ruin my device. Can you comment? thanks eb
I downloaded the 4.3.1 ipsw from above, but it does not have an ipsw file in it. Are there any solutions or anyone else having the same problem.
Mike,
There are 2 seperate files you will need to download in step 1. The first is Snowbreeze and under the second bullet is the iPSW file they are not bundled together. There is also an option to get the IPSW in Snowbreeze.
There’s a link when Snowbreeze request the iPSW.
Thanks
I downloaded both snowbreze and the ipsw. I looked at the link within snow breeze. There wasn’t one for 4.3.1 just 4.3 or 4.3.2 so I didn’t download either one of those
I was able to change the file extension. Downloading the 4.3.1 ipsw from above, would that be able to be used to replace 4.3.2. Asking for someone else.
If you have updated to 4.3.2 you will need to wait for the 4.3.2 jailbreak.
i0n1c (the one who jailbroke 4.3.1) says 4.3.2 is still vulnerable to the jailbreak but there’s still some work to be done.
“Apple has been nice. I just verified that the untether vulnerability is not fixed in iOS 4.3.2 – my Ipad 1 is running untethered jailbroken”
“Of course the public untether binaries will not work with iOS 4.3.2 – I have to generate new untether binaries with new dyld/kernel offsets”

Jailbreaking won’t ruin your iPad. If anything goes wrong you can restore it in iTunes. It will only void your warranty if Apple finds out.
Mike,
If you need the jb for iOS 4.3.2, please use this tutorial.
