How to Install a Untethered Jailbreak for iPad iOS 4.2.1 On a Mac

Finally, after a couple of months since the release of iOS 4.2.1 we have a untethered jailbreak for the iPad.

It did take longer than expected but thanks to the Chronic Dev-Team we now have Greenpois0n, a untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1.

This tutorial explains how to jailbreak your iPad iOS 4.2.1 using a Mac, click here to view the Windows tutorial.

Before you get started you should plug your iPad into the computer and sync your iPad ( If your iPad is already Jailbroken, restore it in iTunes before using Greenpois0n). Then, quit iTunes and turn off your iPad.

  1. You can download Greenpois0n from here or go to the website
Save the file to your desktop when prompted.
  2. Double click the file to extract it and click on the Greenpois0n icon.
  3. Click the Jailbreak button and follow the instructions. This will put your iPad in DFU mode.
  4. Click the Complete button after Greenpois0n has finished installing. This will exit the computer application.
  5. You should see some text scrolling on your iPad. After the iPad restarts, you will have a loader icon on your iPad.

  6. Tap on the loader icon then select and install Cydia.

  7. Once Cydia has installed, you can remove the loader app. You should now have a untethered jailbroken iPad.

  8. You can sync your iPad to reinstall your iPad content.

I downloaded the zip file and extracted them. It did not have any executable file or anything to run greenpois0n and the website was down.

  • Phil

The Greenpois0n website has been overloaded with traffic today. That is why I posted another link to download the file.

I just tested the link, it still works but only on a Mac. If you are using windows, you will have to wait a little longer.

My 4.2.1 iPad is jailbroken by the tethered redsn0w. Do i have to do something in order to rejailbreak it using Greenpois0n? I mean do i have to restore it?

  • Phil

    Yes, you do. Thanks.

  • Jessica247

If your iPad gets stuck towards the end of the restore process, you will need to either update iTunes or reinstall it.

This has happened to me before also, it has nothing to do with the greenpois0n jb.

I have Windows. What link do I need to use.

  • MikeH

How long will it be for those of us that run Windows

  • Phil

I expect greenpois0n for Windows will be released within a couple of days.
