One of the coolest new features of iOS 5 is AirPlay Mirroring.
AirPlay Mirroring allows users to display everything on their iPad 2 or iPhone 4S wirelessly to their HDTV via Apple TV. There is no HDMI cable required.
With the iOS 5 update suddenly everything on your iDevice is AirPlay compatible. This is useful for gaming, presentations, watching videos, browsing the internet or using anything that doesn’t support AirPlay.
How to enable AirPlay Mirroring
- Make sure your iPad 2 has iOS 5 installed.
- Update your Apple TV to the latest software by going to Setting-> General-> Update Software, on your Apple TV.
- After both devices have the necessary software turn on your Apple TV and your HDTV.
- On your iPad 2, double tap the home button or swipe up with four or five fingers to reveal the multitasking bar.
- You should then see the AirPlay icon next to the music controls. Tap on the icon, select Apple TV and turn on Mirroring.
- You should now see the screen from your iPad mirrored to your TV.
Can I do this on iPhone 4 or first gen iPad?
No, it requires the A5 chip. Only the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S has it.
When mirroring using an iphone 4S. Does the data stream directly from the iphone 4S to the Apple TV? Or does the data need a wifi connection/network to stream to the Apple TV?

Make sure they are both on the same wi-Fi network and Apple TV has the latest software installed.

Your other comment was filtered as spam because of the link. I didn’t change it from the spam category because I have tried enabling the AirPlay Mirroring on the 1st iPad with no success. The modification enables the AirPlay icon to display but falls short of working. I have spoke with several other who had the same issue. Even the forum member who modified the redsnow file said he did not test airplay mirroring to confirm that it works.
If I can verify that it works I would love to write a post about it.

My apologies for flying off the handle earlier.
I should clarify that this modification DOES enable Airplay Mirroring but with the Apple AV cable only. It does not enable WiFi mirroring unfortunately. I’m hoping this will eventually be enabled as well.

So I cannot get mirroring on Ipad 2 and latest apple TV eventhough I have followed all instructions? Most annoying!!
You may have already done son but make sure your iPad 2 and Apple TV are on the same network. I thought mine was and I was on a guest network. I AirPlay icon will not even display if it doesn’t detect the Apple TV.
Also, make sure you have the latest software on your Apple TV and AirPlay is active in the settings on your Apple TV (it should be on by default.)
I have a Mi-Fi with Verizon Wireless. I am restricted to only 5GB allowance per month. I have a iphone 4S with Verizon Wireless unlimited data plan. I want to stream from my iphone 4S to Apple TV useing Airplay mirroring. I understand that the Apple TV and the mirroring device have to be on the same Wi-Fi network. My question is, while mirroring from the iphone 4S to the Apple TV, does that use data(towards my monthly allowance) on my Mi-Fi (Wi-Fi) device. Thanks to anyone ahead of time that can help me with this question.
